FOLLOWING THE TRACES OF KAROL WOJTYŁA - NIEGOWIĆ
Niegowić is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Gdów, within Wieliczka County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies approximately 13 kilometres (8 mi) south-east of Wieliczka and 25 km (16 mi) south-east of the regional capital Kraków.
Niegowić was the place of the first appointment of Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, as parish priest. He served there from July 1948 to August 1949.
Catholic Saint Mary's Church in Niegowić - small village situated 30 km from Krakow. In this church Karol Wojtyła ( Pope John Paul II ) was a priest in 1948. It was his first pastoral assignment. Formerly the church was made from wood, but after a fire in 1761, it was moved to Mętków. New church came into being in 1788. It was a baroque version with five altars, many sculptures and Silver Chalice. In 1819, near the church, there was a bell-tower ( campanile) from which during The II World War, Germans have stolen those church bells. In XX century, church was again re-built. In 1966 new church was consecrated by Karol Wojtyła.
