A Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi : www.gandhiworld.in

image M L Rajesh from Tiruvallur district,Tamil Nadu writes…

On 01/10/11 I have hosted a website which displays my exclusive Gandhiji's collections. This bilingual (both Tamil & English) website was inaugurated by Mr.V.Kalyanam who was then Gandhiji's personal secretary. This website contains Gandhiji's memorabilia such as Stamps, coins, currencies, tokens, telephone cards, post cards, special covers, statues and a few rare photo graphs too. Since more than 120 countries have honored Gandhiji by issuing stamps. Personally I believe that today's younger generation who surfs through this site would be really attracted towards Gandhiji and his principles. My dream of spreading Gandhian principle across the globe has resulted in www.gandhiworld.in .

Supply Ships…

image

Date of Issue : 31 August 2011

Pitcairn Islands Post issued  a set of four stamps on 31 August 2011 featuring supply Ships. The supply ships are a part of Pitcairn’s history and the Pitcairners have much to be thankful for with the service provided by the Southern Salvor; Claymore II; Braveheart; Taporo VIII and all their crews, for whom this issue is dedicated.

image

Pitcairn’s remoteness means it is dependent on small supply ships to provide a lifeline to the community. Since the withdrawal of the Blue Star Line in 2003, the residents have relied on the smaller vessels that ply their way from Mangareva in French Polynesia, some 500 km away.

Loading and unloading can be a difficult business. Depending on the weather and sea conditions, the decision is made which side of the Island to carry out this tricky operation involving all hands and a good understanding between winch operators and the longboat crews. Sometimes the weather and sea conditions win out, with some items not able to be landed.

The Struve Geodetic Arc - The “measuring tape” of the globe

image

Date of Issue : 6 May 2011

Hi ! Here is the recent stamp from Finland featuring  The Struve Geodetic Arc, The “measuring tape” of the globe. The two stamps in the miniature sheet  are in  within each other in a very unusual style giving a look of single round stamp in the miniature sheet. In fact it is a composite beautiful se-tenant pair of stamps in which The outer stamp is round, and the inner has the shape of the map of Finland. A very interesting design for the collectors of se-tenants as well as those collecting on themes related with  Maps and geography..

In my last post I published the design of medals awarded in Philanippon 2011. Undoubtedly the design of medals  in the form of Japanese Fan is wonderful The idea of the designer is very innovative. Our distinguished member Mr Naresh Agarwal gives compliments to the designers and organizers of Philanippon 2011 for this unique design….. This is all in this Post…Till Next Post …Have a Nice Time !

The Struve Geodetic Arc
The “measuring tape” of the globe appears on new Finnish stamp issued in May 2011.
The Struve Geodetic Arc was used for determining the size and shape of the globe. The arc, which is approximately 2,820 kilometers long, extends from the Black Sea in Ukraine all the way to the Arctic Ocean in Norway. The arc was named after F.G.W. Struve who managed the measurement in 1816–1855.

The arc measurement stations are located in ten countries: Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. The 34 most representative measurement points of the Struve Arc were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a joint site of ten countries in 2005.

The miniature sheet  indicates the six points located in Finland. The two stamps in the release are within each other in the miniature sheet. The outer stamp is round, and the inner has the shape of the map of Finland.

Magnificent medals of Philanippon 2011….

image

The medals of Philanippon 2011 are not just  beautiful but innovative  too. In fact, I feel the organizers should be innovative in their approach as we see philately stays in innovation now a days. Stamps of different designs, shapes and dimensions. These innovations are very pleasant. My  heartiest thanks to the organizers who came up with such innovations and showed the philatelic world a new way to be adopted in future exhibitions.

Further, I believe these medals should be presented in a beautiful show case/display pack so that these may be placed otherwise these are just kept in lockers for passing their life time.......

Living Australian..

untitled

Date of Issue : 7 July 2011

Australia Post issued a beautiful set of five stamps on 7th July depicting the the theme “ Living Australian”. The stamps feature the life of  Australian people. The set is wonderful and best suitable for themes like tourism, people and culture, life style and some more associated themes like pets, wildlife etc…The first day cancellation on FDC is very interesting in the form of ‘slippers’ which signifies the “life at leisure”.

Living Australian

What does it mean to be "Living Australian?" The Australian day Council of NSW with the support of Australia Post encouraged Australians from across the country to explore the theme of "Who We Are" as a nation, by showcasing how they live as Aussies every day through the creative medium of photography.

image

The response was overwhelming, with 3,350 images submitted in the categories of Community; Pride; Family and Mates; and Freedom. The winning entries, including the overall winner "Best Friends" by Ann Clarke of South Australia, are featured in Living Australian 2011 Stamps Series.

The overall winner: Best Friends.
The bond between man's best friend and his owner has always been a strong one. Dogs offer companionship, loyalty, and for large numbers of people they also provide a service.

Australia Day Council of NSW

Embrace Friendship
Australia Day allows family and friends the opportunity to get together and celebrate. It can also be the day when groups of people meet up and forge life-long friendships.

Cricket at the GABBA
The love of sport can grab you when you're quite young in this land of sporting fanatics. Whatever the game, or its level of popularity, you will find a spectator following.

Little Man's Business
Performing the Wedge Tail Eagle Dance allows this young boy to learn the ways of his ancestors, to keep tradition alive and to celebrate his own heritage.

This Is So Relaxing
This kangaroo relaxes on the beach and enjoys the sun, sand and surf like so many other Australians.
