demello

Mr.Daniel made an attempt for this record by organizing a major philatelic exhibition Birdpex-2011’ on 7th and 8th December 2011 at S.M.S. community hall, Brahmavar. More than 6000 people including VIPS, Juries, stamp collectors participated in this event.

In the Primary School, when a teacher encouraged Daniel and his other classmates to develop any one of the hobbies, the collection of stamps attracted Daniel. He began by collecting stamps of all types and then went on to specialize in water birds, which aroused his interest in them so much. Since his house is surrounded by a river and a lake with variety of water birds, he took special interest in them.

Later he also took to ornithological studies, Bird watching and Environment protection activities. The awards, distinctions and recognitions he won are numerous, 10 international level from Belgium, Austria, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok , Korea, Indonesia, China and India, 21 national level and 13 state level and from 31 prestigious institutions in Karnataka State, including All India Sahitya Convention Award, District Rajyaotsava Award, Vishveshvarayya Award, Ambedkar award, Extraordinary Personality of Konkani Award.

Daniel’s another noteworthy achievement was his entry into the ‘Limca Book of Records’ a due recognition for his rare collection of ducks stamps and also three records in ‘India Book Of Records’ for largest collection of ducks stamps, largest collection of birds stamps and one man largest exhibition, Birdpex-2011.

He is also a member of all the recognized Philatelic Associations in India. He has, on his own initiative, organized 163 exhibitions on Philately and 31 workshops on environment and philately till date, and also actively involved himself in creating an awareness about wild life and the need to protect the environment. He has presented papers on birds and stamps at seminars held, even at the national level. New stamps on Birds

Birds of the Rock

image

Date of Issue : 16 April 2012

Gibraltar Post issued a new set of Definitive stamps featuring birds on 16 April 2012. Though the stamps are definitive but look very attractive !! It is a beautiful set for bird lovers !!

image

Definitive 2012 'Birds of the Rock'

Red-necked Nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis) Two species of Nightjar are found in Europe, both of which migrate past Gibraltar. The Red-necked Nightjar breeds only in the western Mediterranean and migrates to tropical Africa during the autumn, returning in the late spring. They are most frequently seen in Gibraltar during levanter conditions. This species feeds mainly on nocturnal flying insects and breeds primarily in open woodlands, favouring Stone Pine woods, which echo at night with its distinctive call.

Little Owl (Athene noctua) This owl, which is found from North Africa and Western Europe to China, is the most common nocturnal bird of prey in Gibraltar. 8-12 pairs breed in cliff habitat around the Rock, and less frequently in holes in old walls. They prey on insects, reptiles and small mammals, and can sometimes be seen during daylight hours. Clutches consist of 3-5 eggs. Little Owls are not migratory and birds are present all year round.

Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) This is a migratory species that spends the winter in tropical Africa and returns to Europe to breed in the late spring. Although declining throughout part of its range, the Spotted Flycatcher is a common migrant in Gibraltar. The species began to breed in the Botanic Gardens in 2009 and has done so ever since. Clutch size normally consists of 4-6 eggs. Up to three young have been reared in Gibraltar. In spite of its name the Spotted Flycatcher is streaked rather than spotted.

Contemporary Dances

On March 22, 2012, An Post issued four stamps depicting Contemporary Dance themes.

The term contemporary dance conjures up a host of images, some of which can seem contradictory at first. It borrows from the techniques of both ballet and modern dance, yet it is largely unchoreographed. It allows a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques.

Unlike the more established dance traditions, contemporary dance is not directly associated with any specific dance techniques. That’s why it is often described as a dance philosophy, as opposed to a technique of dancing. Non - devotees of contemporary dance are often left baffled by its popularity, claiming that they cannot make sense of it. On the other hand, aficionados of contemporary dance passionately embrace it as an art form that stimulates them intellectually, visually and aurally.

In 2012, An Post celebrates the contemporary dance movements with a set of four Ger Garland designed stamps, each one depicting a unique contemporary dance trend performed by some of Ireland’s foremost dance companies - Fabulous Beast, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Ireland and CoisCéim.

Products available with this issue:

Contemporary Arts - Dance (Block of 4) Stamp Set (1205SET) €2.20

Imagine a cricketer who is a semi-nomadic cattle herder living among the wild animals of Africa. Imagine him who wears layers of beads; who sets fire on the field with his bright red clothes and flying braided hair; he who gives war cries while throwing or hitting a ball and is actually a crusader for peace. Imagine him - a Maasai tribesman - playing a T-20 league. Unbelievable? Then you ought to meet the Maasai Cricket Warriors. . . Read More…

New Stamps from UN Postal Administration..

UNPA

Date of Issue : 1 July 2011

On 1 July 2011, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a set of six commemorative stamps with the theme "ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) - Education".

The stamp designs are based on six internationally agreed "Education for All" goals which aim to meet the learning needs of all children and adults by 2015.

Education is a fundamental human right and essential for the exercise of all other human rights. It promotes individual freedom and empowerment and yields important development benefits. Education is a powerful tool by which economically and socially marginalized adults and children can lift themselves out of poverty and participate fully as citizens. Yet millions of children and adults remain deprived of educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty.
