Hi !

Here is a beautiful set of stamps issued by  New Zealand Post on February 1, 2012  featuring  five iconic native New Zealand trees. Each of the beautiful species is depicted in a detailed illustrative style and the scientific name of each species is included in the design . This is an awesome set of stamps on Flora ! Each stamp design has a very cool light color background that contrasts with the color of the flower giving a very attractive look to the stamps. The special feature of the stamps is that they give botanical details of the plant. This set is sure to be liked by Flora theme collectors as well as a general plant lover !! New Zealand’s isolation from the rest of the world has allowed its unique flora to evolve and flourish, resulting in the distinctive array of native trees present today. This high degree of endemism makes New Zealand’s native trees truly special, so much so that Conservation International has recognised New Zealand as a world biodiversity hotspot. Almost all of New Zealand’s native species of conifers, flowering trees and tree ferns occur nowhere else – resulting in native forests like no other on Earth.

The individual stamps in this issue are as follows:

60c - Pōhutukawa

The pōhutukawa is a species of Metrosideros, and is often referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree due to its display of bright red, pollen-producing stamens in summer. The undersides of the leaves and flower buds are densely furry with white hairs. Although it is widely cultivated throughout the country, in nature it is restricted to the northern North Island, mostly in costal habitats.

$1.20 - Cabbage Tree

The cabbage tree (Cordyline australis) or tï kouka is found throughout New Zealand in moist soils and swamps. It is a tall, much-branched tree, and has long, narrow leaves with many parallel veins. The abundant small white flowers are attached to the branching stems of large inflorescences, and the fruits are white to purple berries.

  $1.90 - Kōwhai

The vibrant kōwhai tree is most conspicuous in spring, with its large golden-yellow flowers. Its flowers are bird pollinated and the petals are arranged in a sort of tube to contain a sufficient quantity of nectar. Sophora microphylla is widespread and grows near streams and at lake edges.

$2.40 - Nīkau

The nīkau (Rhopalostylis) is the furthest south palm in the Southern Hemisphere. It is impressive in height, and the top of the trunk is crowned by a spreading cluster of enormous leaves divided into leaflets. Flower clusters arise below the crown of leaves and form bright red berries. Where the nīkau is plentiful it gives the feeling of a tropical forest.

$2.90 - Mānuka

The mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is a widespread shrub that sometimes grows to a small tree. Its leaves are very small and quite sharply pointed, and it is abundant with small white flowers (although pink and red varieties are cultivated). The mānuka is well known for the dark, strong flavoured honey it produces.

This seems to be this year’s last Europa 2011 issue as most of the countries have already issued stamps for 2011 Europa Theme ‘ Forests ‘. A specialized website on Indian Postal History

Mr Rajesh Pamnani of Hydrabad has created a new website on Indian Postal History. It is a very informative website for the collectors of Postal History. It has different sections on Indian Postal History, Indian Postal Markings, Postage Stamps,India (Used Abroad) and gallery of Indian Registration Labels, Bazar Card of India, Speed Post and other  items.  A separate section has been given for research articles.  Rajesh Pamnani is a serious collector of Indian Postal History. He has started a website:  www.pamnani.info detailing a few of his collecting interests. It is kept as an open source for collaborative research.

Best Europa 2011 stamp..

 

Winner of EUROPA 2011 Stamp Competition

Turkish PTT declared winner of the EUROPA 2011 Competition

PostEurop  announced Turkish PTT (Turkey), Magyar Posta (Hungary) and CTT Correios (Portugal) as the top three winners of the 2011 EUROPA Stamp Competition at the plenary dinner in Istanbul hosted by Turkish PTT on 12th October.

The results of this year’s Europa Stamp competition  declared on 12th October ,  heralded a new record high of 5,576 number of public votes registered from all over the world. Turkish PTT, postal operator for Turkey was declared the Gold award winner of this competition. The winning stamp from Turkish PTT was designed by Bülent Ates capturing the forest in the autumn.

 

Second runner up

EUROPA stamps are special stamps issued by European postal administrations/enterprises, under the aegis of PostEurop, in which 'Europe' is the central theme. In this 19th consecutive year and around the theme "Forest" to coincide with the UN campaign, “International Year of the Forest” over fifty creative entries were received from all-over Europe.
The close first-runner of the EUROPA Stamp competition was Magyar Posta, postal operator from Hungary and finally, the second-runner up of the EUROPA Stamp competition went to CTT Corrieos, postal operator for Portugal.
“Each year we see the expectations grow around EUROPA stamps from every perspective with growing interest and popularity. Indeed the stamps are more than just work of art, it personifies the country and brought together it gives us a collage of the Europe and the European Postal industry. Therefore, PostEurop has taken a bold step and issued the first ever EUROPA Stamp collection album” declares commented Botond Szebeny, PostEurop Secretary General.
Markku Penttinen, Chairman of the PostEurop Stamps and Philately working group from Itella adds, “We continue to be proud of the work done so far and the EUROPA Stamp collection album marks another great achievement for our experts. It is beautiful, memorable and immortalized."

New Stamps on Int.Year of Forests..

 

Tijuca National Park

Here are new stamps on International Year of Forests.The main theme for the International Year of Forests 2011 is “Forests for People”. It highlights the dynamic relationship between forests and the people who depend on them. Brasil Post issued a souvenir sheet commemorating International Year of Forests and World Philatelic Exhibition Brasiliana 2013 . UNPA will also issue new stamps on 13 October in celebration of International Year of Forests.

On Souvenir Sheet…

In the souvenir sheet’s background, a forest symbolizing the Park can be seen. Green in different tones was used to create a harmonious effect by overlapping the elements portrayed in the stamps, which represent typical fauna and flora species: the violet-capped woodnymph (Thalurania glaucopis), the green-headed Tanager (Tangara seledon), the hairy dwarf porcupine (Coendou insidiosus) and the orchid Hadrolaelia lobata, which is the symbol of the Tijuca National Park, an endemic species threatened by extinction. On the upper left corner, one can see the logo of the International Year of Forests and the logo of the World Philatelic Exhibition Brasiliana 2013 can be seen on the right.

The Tijuca Forest is a mountainous hand-planted rainforest in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the world's largest urban forest, covering some 32 km² (12.4 mi²). The forest shares its name with the Tijuca bairro or neighborhood that contains it.The Tijuca Forest is home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife, many threatened by extinction, found only in the Atlantic Rainforest After all the original forest had been destroyed to make way for coffee farms, Tijuca was replanted by Major Manuel Gomes Archer in the second half of the 19th century in a successful effort to protect Rio's water supply.In 1961, Tijuca Forest was declared a National Park. The Forest contains a number of attractions, most notably the colossal sculpture of Christ the Redeemeratop Corcovado mountain.

Stamps from UN Postal administration

 

On 13 October 2011, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue three mini-sheets of eight stamps to commemorate the International Year of Forests.

Every one of us is connected to forests. Forests contribute to the balance of oxygen, carbon dioxide and humidity in the air. Over 40 per cent of the world’s oxygen is produced from rainforests. A tree releases 8 to 10 times more moisture into the atmosphere than the equivalent area of the ocean. Forests protect watersheds which supply fresh water to rivers – a critical source of the water we drink and use in our daily lives.

Healthy forests sustain healthy people. Tropical forests provide a vast array of medicinal plants used in healing and health care. More than a quarter of modern medicines originate from tropical forest plants. Forests curb transmission of infectious diseases. Undisturbed tropical forests can have a moderating effect on the spread of insect- and animal-borne diseases.

The International Year of Forests 2011 offers a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the challenges facing many of the world’s forests and the people who depend on them.

2011 EUROPA Stamps

- The United Nations has declared 2011 as International Year of Forests. During the year all 48 members of PostEurop will be issuing Europa stamps which illustrate the biological, ecological and climatic benefits of forests.
"The Europa issue (also known as Europa - CEPT until 1992) is an annual joint issue of stamps with a common design or theme by postal administrations member of the European Communities (1956-1959), the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT from 1960 to 1992), then the PostEurop Association since 1993."
The first Europa stamps were issued in 1956 . This year the new Europa logo featuring a grapic depiction of a mail recepticle will be incorporated into the designs.PostEurop is the association which represents the interest of 48 European public postal operators. New Stamps on Forest Birds of South Africa

 

Date of Issue : 15 July 2011

The United Nations declared 2011 the International Year of Forests. To coincide with this, the South African Post Office issued stamps on  forest birds as its theme for a new set of stamps in the South African bird series.

The birds depicted on the set of five stamps are the green twin spot, olive bush-shrike, Cape parrot, Knysna turaco (lourie) and the African crowned eagle.

In South Africa, indigenous forests cover only about 0,25 percent of South Africa's land surface. With a few exceptions, such as the forests of the Knysna area and the KwaZulu-Natal coastal dune systems, forests are small, usually occupying less than 1 000 ha. These forests provide shelter to some of South Africa's most spectacular birds.
