HERITAGE  SOCIETY  OF KERALA

An open invitation for concerted efforts for the conservation and promotion of Kerala’s Heritage on numismatic and philately.

Friends,

All of us are very much aware that numismatics and philately of the erstwhile Princely States of Kerala, being a great part of Kerala’s Heritage is neglected today very much, which may lead it to being obsolete in the years to come.  The coinage and postal system of the Cochin, Travancore, Travancore – Cochin and the Malabar period had maintained a very high standard, internationally renowned for its high quality and efficiency at those times and even today. We can feel proud to be a part of this rich heritage.

It is our bounden duty to procure, preserve and propagate this treasured heritage we bequeathed from our ancestors for our posterity.  Realising this fact some like minded philatelist and numismatists met together for seriously taking up this subject matter for discussion. In the ensuing three meetings thereof it was concluded that there is a need for the formation of a society of members from India and abroad.

An organizing committee was formed to take the initiative and hold a general meeting of interested persons on this subject, inviting them for this meet to be held on 27th May 2012 at 11 AM at Hotel Pearl Residency, Thrissur – Thrissur being the cultural capital of Kerala.

Please ensure your attendance as well as inform us of your arrival for making the needful arrangements.  Also we would very much appreciate if you could join the debate with suggestions that would cater to the subject matter of Heritage.  We need to have representatives from all districts as well all Clubs at this meet. Please do come and also invite your friend who would like to join us.

Extraordinary stamps of 2011

Eucalyptus stamp from Australia

image

Hi ! Here are some more unique stamps issued in 2011…These are from the  the list of Top ten stamps of 2011 rated by International Stamp News !!

Aromatic postage stamps infused with eucalyptus oil gave mail deliveries a distinct Australian scent when they were released in spring 2011. The printer of the Australian stamps said the scent could freshen up the musty files of stamp collectors for decades.

"The eucalyptus scent is encapsulated into little bubbles and we put that into a printable varnish," Graeme Lidgerwood, the sales manager of the print firm Ego, said. "It could last forever. The scent will only wear off when you rub the surface to break the micro bubbles."

DSCN0236

One of them has deeply touched to my heart , was Sh. Pranab Kumar Dash, who has lost his right hand and was badly injured in a parcel Bomb explosion. One may see his hand and his supporting stick. The other dignitaries were Mr. Mohan Jena, MP, Jajpur, Mr. Bijoy Kumar Mohanty, MLA, Bhubaneswar Central, Mr. Jitu Patnaik, MLA, Champua. Sh. Purna Chandra das Presided over the conference and conducted by Sh. B. Samal and Gadadhar Raut.

DSCN0239

Resolution

It is observed that the release of Commemorative Stamps and First day Covers of places and persons of Odisha possessing historical / cultural importance of Odisha is very poor in comparison to other States. Parsurameswar Temple of Bhubaneswar which has been specially identified by the Archaeological Survey of India as the oldest temple in Bhubaneswar may be considered for the purpose.

In addition, the case of eminent freedom fighters Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar, Jayee Rajaguru, noted Odia poet and Sahitya Academy award winner Sachidananda Routray, places of natural beauty like Chilika Lake and Similipal Forest Reserve, Historical monuments of Khandagiri and Udayagiri, Rajarani Temple and Mukteswar Temple of Bhubaneswar having specialty in construction, Kichakeswari Temple of Mayurbhanj made of complete black stone are suggested for the purpose.

Celebrating the Centenary Year of Bihar Through stamps

Bihar Day

Bihar Day is much more than celebration.  It is more than the pride and excitement of citizens who call themselves Biharis. Bihar Day, celebrated on 22 March to commemorate the State’s separation from Bengal in 1912.

This is an important occasion to remind that it is  the  historical place in the world that is the cradle of Hinduism, the birthplace of Buddhism, Jainism and the tenth guru of Sikhs. The day is celebrated  with flag raising ceremonies, tributes to  heroes and fireworks taking place in the capital – Patna.

The celebrations of the Bihar Divas on March 22, every year, crossed the boundaries of the state and the country. The foundation day of Bihar was celebrated with gaiety and fervor in several states and foreign countries.

Today, on 22 March 2012 Bihar completes 100 years of its formation  .
