New Titanic stamps..

New Titanic centenary stamps from Ireland…

Titanic 1

Thomas Andrews is on the 55c stamp.

Ger Garland designed four stamps featuring the faces of four Titanic passengers, which have been unveiled in Cobh, Co. Cork. There are two 55c stamps - one with Co. Down Titanic shipbuilder Thomas Andrews and another of Irish photographer Father Browne, who left the ship at his hometown of Cork. There are also two 82c stamps.

One shows Titanic Captain Edward J. Smith surrounded by oblivious passengers on the doomed ship’s stern and the other is of life boat six survivor Molly Brown with the first class staircase behind her.

There’s a strong postal connection with the Titanic, which was also an RMS Royal Mail ship. It had five postal clerks on board, three Americans and two British. All lost their lives when the ship sank.

Titanic survivor Albert Thessinger was the last person to see them alive. “I urged them to leave their work,” he said. “They shook their heads and continued at work. I saw them no more.”

Contemporary Dances

On March 22, 2012, An Post issued four stamps depicting Contemporary Dance themes.

The term contemporary dance conjures up a host of images, some of which can seem contradictory at first. It borrows from the techniques of both ballet and modern dance, yet it is largely unchoreographed. It allows a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques.

Unlike the more established dance traditions, contemporary dance is not directly associated with any specific dance techniques. That’s why it is often described as a dance philosophy, as opposed to a technique of dancing. Non - devotees of contemporary dance are often left baffled by its popularity, claiming that they cannot make sense of it. On the other hand, aficionados of contemporary dance passionately embrace it as an art form that stimulates them intellectually, visually and aurally.

In 2012, An Post celebrates the contemporary dance movements with a set of four Ger Garland designed stamps, each one depicting a unique contemporary dance trend performed by some of Ireland’s foremost dance companies - Fabulous Beast, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Ireland and CoisCéim.

Products available with this issue:

Contemporary Arts - Dance (Block of 4) Stamp Set (1205SET) €2.20

New Stamps on Renewable Energy…

image image

Keep Earth Alive !!

An Post (Ireland)  released a set of five stamps on 5 August 2011 to celebrate renewable energy technologies. The stamps feature the five main sources of renewable energy  wind, wave, hydropower, solar and bio fuel.

image

Date of Issue : 5 August 2011

Renewable Energy

The term 'renewable energy' describes a wide range of naturally occurring energy sources, all of which can be replenished. The stamps illustrate five specific types of renewable energy technologies; wind, hydro, solar, wave and biofuel.

Wind generated electricity has made huge strides in recent years; its capacity currently is close to 1,500 MW, mainly from about 90 on shore wind farms.

Hydro energy is energy that is taken from water and converted to electricity. The most common method of using energy from water is a hydroelectric dam, where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the energy is captured to run a generator.

Although Ireland has a reputation for rain, there's enough sunshine for substantial use of solar power, using solar panels to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. A growing number of households are now using solar panels on the roofs of their houses to generate much of their electricity.

Waves and tides along the Irish coast offer enormous possibilities; the sea is a limitless and reliable source of power. It is predicted that Ireland could install 30,000 MW of wave energy conversion facilities by 2030.

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to both animal and vegetable derived material. Biofuel is the term for biomass that has been converted into liquid fuel.

The use of these energy sources reduces  greenhouse gas emissions and diversifies  energy supply.

Philatelic Clubs in USA

New Stamp Collectors Club forms at Fair Park

By Tina Taylor

CROSSVILLE — Today, stamp collecting is still one of the world's most popular indoor hobbies. It is estimated that about 25 million people in the United States collect stamps; while worldwide it is closer to 200 million.

Thousands of stamp (philatelic) clubs and organizations enjoy sharing their rare stamps and their history. Everyone specializes in some country with a worldwide collection being enormous, running into thousands of volumes, and incredibly expensive to acquire. The use of the internet has made it much easier to collect, trade, swap, sale, share and auction their stamps.

Currently there does not seem to be a club in this area, until now! Ray Kusmierski has enjoyed being a member of six different stamp clubs in the past 60 years of collecting.  He thinks one of the most rewarding parts of stamp collecting, is making new contacts. He corresponds with people from around the world making many interesting new friends, who also share his love for stamps. Every senior interested in sharing stamp stories is welcome to join the stamp club. The first meeting of the Fair Park Senior Center Stamp Club will be Wednesday Sept. 7 at noon.

World Population Day…

image

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world's population reached five billion people.

image

World Population Day 2011: The World at 7 Billion

World Population Day will kick off the 7 Billion Actions campaign.

This year, as the world population is expected to surpass 7 billion, UNFPA and partners are launching a campaign called 7 Billion Actions. It aims to engage people, spur commitment and spark actions related to the opportunities and challenges presented by a world of 7 billion people.

In many ways a world of 7 billion is an achievement: Globally, people are living longer and healthier lives, and couples are choosing to have fewer children.

New Stamp on Amnesty International

image

Date of Issue : 30 June 2011

On the 30 June, 2011, An Post issued a stamp to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of Amnesty International.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement that campaigns for internationally recognised human rights for all, regardless of political or religious affiliations. It was founded on 28 May, 1961, after a British lawyer, Peter Beneson was reading an article in a newspaper while he was on the London underground, on his way to work. It told the story of two students in Portugal who had been jailed for raising a toast to freedom.

Soon after, he had a letter published in The Observer, London, and other international newspapers, about these ‘forgotten prisoners’ and this attracted over 1,000 offers of support, enough for the launch of Amnesty International. Shortly afterwards, in 1962, its Irish section was launched. Sean MacBride, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and a recipient of a Nobel peace prize, was very involved with Amnesty International in its foundation years.

Discussion

Can you identify which is the real stamp ???

andorra

Difficult to identify…..

The small one on the (right side) is a picture of the real stamp. The bigger image (left side) is the design produced by the French post earlier this year.

This "stamp" is self adhesive and produced on a kind of plastic giving a kind of wood effect.
