Great Indian Personalities

Mohammad Ali Jauhar

M3

Mohammad Ali Jauhar (1878-1931) was an Indian Muslim leader, activist, scholar, journalist and poet, and was among the leading figures of the Khilafat Movement.

M5

M4

He was one of the founding members of All India Muslim League and its former president.

Mohammad Ali Jauhar is remembered as a fiery leader of many of India's Muslims. He is celebrated as a hero by the Muslims of Pakistan, who claim he inspired the Pakistan movement. But in India, he is remembered for his leadership during Khilafat Movement and the Non-Cooperation Movement (1919–1922) and his leadership in Muslim education.

M

The famous Muhammad Ali Road in south Mumbai, is named after him. He along with Gandhi traveled to Britain for attending round table conference sometimes in the 1930s. There he delivered his famous speech which included his wish not to get buried in 'slave India'. During the same tour he fell ill and died in London. Respecting his wish, his followers brought his dead body to Palestine, which was then a British Mandated territory (not in Turkish control), and buried him at Baitul Muqaddas. Many Indian Muslims with interest in history were wondering if his tomb is still intact. One Hyderabadi scholar Omar Khakidi who was working with MIT, Boston, found Ali's grave, which was still in good shape.

Homage to Chauri Chaura Martyrs

Special Cancellation by Gorakhpur Postal Division

postmark

Chauri Chaura is a town near Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The town is known most for an event in February 1922 during the British Raj when a police chowki (station) was set on fire by a mob of angry citizens, killing 23 policemen inside.

Chauri Chaura incident

Around the first of February, 1922, volunteers participating in the Non-cooperation Movement protested for a fair price for meat in the marketplace. The demonstrators were beaten back by local police. In response, a protest against the police was called for February 4, to be held in the local marketplace.

As February 4, 1922, arrived, approximately 2000 protesters assembled and began marching towards the Chauri Chaura bazaar. Armed police were dispatched to control the situation while the crowd marched towards the market and started shouting anti-government slogans. In an attempt to frighten and disperse the crowd, the police fired warning shots into the air but this only agitated the crowd who began pelting the police with stones.

With the situation getting out of control, the sub inspector ordered the police to open fire on the advancing crowd, killing three and wounding several others. Reports vary on the reason for the police retreat with some claiming that the police ran out of ammunition while others claim that fear of the crowd's unexpectedly courageous and angry reaction to the gunfire were the cause but whatever the case, in the ensuing chaos, the heavily outnumbered police fell back to the shelter of the police chowki while the angry mob advanced.

Infuriated by the gunfire into their ranks, the crowd took revenge by setting the chowki ablaze, killing the 23 police men trapped inside.

India’s first floating Post office on Dal Lake…

image

India’s first floating Post office was inaugurated in Sri Nagar by  Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Monday. Now tourists to Jammu and Kashmir  have another attraction -- a floating post office on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the first of its kind in the country.

After inauguration of the Post office

"This innovation by India Post will be a boon for the tourists visiting the lake," Pilot said in a statement. Besides offering normal services, the place will also have a philately museum and a shop that will sell postage stamps and other products.

gh

"This is the first such post office in India. It has been made as a tourist focus post office on a huge house boat and will provide a unique and tourist-friendly service to the people of Kashmir and to tourists from across the world," John Samuel, the state's chief post master, told IANS.

Samuel also said that the special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here will carry a special design which will have the picturesque sceneries of Dal Lake and Srinagar city.
"These pictures will reach wherever these letters will be posted and will promote Kashmir as a tourist destination across the world," he said. Pilot also launched two special postal covers on the Dal Lake.

"It is a befitting tribute to the lake, which is one of the most famous and often quoted symbols of Kashmir, and often referred to as the crown of Kashmir," he said.
Pilot later launched a special mail van service from Srinagar to Shopian district. The postal department currently has 1,693 post offices in Jammu and Kashmir.
