Romare Bearden art work on stamps..

US art

Date of Issue : 28 September 2011

US Postal Service issued a set of four on 28 September featuring art work of renowned artist Romare Bearden .

Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was one of the 20th century's most distinguished American artists. His art has been praised for depicting the complexities of African-American experience while addressing universal themes, and is in the permanent collections of major museums across the nation. Though he created works in many media, he is particularly celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to collage. Using various materials, including cut papers, foil, and fabrics, he transformed collage into a forceful means of expression with mainstream appeal.

Four collages by Bearden, have been features on the Romare Bearden (Forever) stamp sheet.

US art
Conjunction (1971) is a large work showing a Southern social scene, reflecting Bearden's recollections of his early childhood. The work celebrates the human activity of connecting through touch and conversation, and pays homage to the Southern quilt-making tradition suggested by the fabrics of the women's brightly patterned dresses.

US art

Odysseus: Poseidon, The Sea God—Enemy of Odysseus (1977) is one of many images by Bearden based on literary sources. Poseidon was the archenemy of Odysseus in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey; his image here reveals Bearden's deep exploration of the human condition.

US art

Prevalence of Ritual: Conjur Woman is one of a series of important collages Bearden made in 1964. The power and dignity of the black woman was a central theme in his work, and the spiritual and mysterious "conjur" woman was a recurring subject.

US art

Falling Star (1979) juxtaposes the ordinary, a domestic interior, with the marvelous, as seen through its windows. Bearden uses layers of meaning in this work, addressing universal human experience.

Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, but grew up in New York City. His parents had hoped he would study medicine, but he ultimately earned a degree in education in 1935. For many years, he worked as a caseworker with the New York City Department of Social Services and painted in the evenings, making an ever-expanding study of world art. He wrote lyrics for songs, including the hit "Seabreeze," and designed album covers, costumes, and stage sets. He was also a respected scholar and writer. In 1969, Bearden's income as an artist finally allowed him to leave his day job.

USPS honours American Artist Edward Hopper…

image

Date of Issue : 24 August 2011

Today, the U.S. Postal Service forged ahead with its American Treasures series by issuing the 10th entry, a Forever Stamp featuring Edward Hopper's sailboat painting, "The Long Leg." Hopper's 1935 sunlit painting depicts a boat sailing against the wind near Provincetown, MA.

The oil painting (circa 1935) depicts the coast of the Provincetown area. A boat sailing near the coast can be seen, as well as an isolated house in the background. The work, preserved at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, is striking due to its use of light. As often in Hopper's oeuvre, light is used to reflect solitude, absence and waiting. There are no characters in The Long Leg, leaving the landscape completely bare and encouraging its viewers to reflect.

Edward Hopper, Self-Portrait, 1906

Edward Hopper

Known as a painter of loneliness, isolation and solitude, Hopper was born in Nyack, N.Y., July 22, 1882.While most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. In both his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life.

“Morning Sun” (1952)                                 Lighthouse at Two Lights

Hopper was a good student in grade school and showed talent in drawing at age five. He readily absorbed his father’s intellectual tendencies and love of French and Russian culture. In his early self-portraits, Hopper tended to represent himself as skinny, ungraceful, and homely. Though a tall and quiet teenager, his prankish sense of humor found outlet in his art. Hopper began painting urban and architectural scenes in a dark palette. Then he shifted to the lighter palette of the Impressionists before returning to the darker palette with which he was comfortable.

Girl at Sewing Machine (1921)              New York Restaurant (1922)

Hopper derived his subject matter from two primary sources: one, the common features of American life (gas stations, motels, restaurants, theaters, railroads, and street scenes) and its inhabitants; and two, seascapes and rural landscapes. Regarding his style, Hopper defined himself as “an amalgam of many races” and not a member of any school, particularly the “Ashcan School”. Once Hopper achieved his mature style, his art remained consistent and self-contained, in spite of the numerous art trends that came and went during his long career.Hopper died in his studio near Washington Square in New York City on May 15, 1967.

Posteitaline  has issued a Miniature sheet commemorating Giorgio Vasari , famous Italian artist on 30 July 2011 and a set of five stamps on Tourism on 23 July 2011. The four Tourism stamps feature scenic beauty of Italy with a stamp depicting the Tourism Theme.

  image   image

               Vasari's self-portrait

Giorgio Vasari (30 July 1511 – 27 June 1574) was an Italian painter, writer, historian and architect, who is today famous for his biographies of Italian artists, considered the ideological foundation of art-historical writing. The stamp reproduces a part of the "St. Luke painting the Virgin" that Giorgio Vasari created around 1565 in the Chapel of the Painters of the Basilica of SS. Annunziata in Florence. The Lives of the Artists) is perhaps the most important book on the history of art ever written. In this work Vasari made famous the term 'Rinascita', or Renaissance. The Lives is an invaluable source of information about the early artists of Italy.

The Vasari Corridor passing over the Ponte Vecchio       The Loggia of Vasari in Arezzo

As an architect, Vasari was perhaps more successful than as a painter. In Florence, Vasari also built the long passage, now called Vasari Corridor, which connects the Uffizi with the Palazzo Pitti on the other side of the river. The enclosed corridor passes alongside the River Arno on an arcade, crosses the Ponte Vecchio and winds around the exterior of several buildings.
