Flag stamp with unique design..

spain

Date of Issue : 10 November 2011

Hi ! I just came across a wonderful stamp issued by Spanish Post featuring flags of Spain and Russia. On the very first look it appears to be keyboard of Piano but actually  this stamp is a design by Lucinda Morrissey in which the vertical stripes of both the Spanish and Russian flags entwine: red and white in the first strip, yellow and blue in the second one and red in the final strip. This is perhaps the rare design featuring flags of two countries. The designer of the stamp needs great appreciation for designing such a unique stamp with great skill  to show close relationship of the two countries. This stamp is a very special collective item for those collecting stamps on flags.

2011 Year of Spain in Russia and Russia in Spain

The year 2011 has been officially declared as the Year of Spain in Russia and Russia in Spain and philately joins this event by issuing a commemorative stamp.

The idea of the Dual Year 2011 Spain-Russia came at the initiative of the Heads of Government of both countries during the International Conference held in the Russian city of Yaroslavl in September 2009.

The aim of the initiative is to implement an extensive programme of educational, cultural, scientific and economic projects during 2011 in order to give Spanish-Russian relationships a qualitative boost in terms of future perspectives.

The Dual Year has been an important step in the Russian-Spanish relationship and the rapprochement between the two countries. Activities scheduled include forums between universities, ballet and music festivals, the temporary exchange of masterpieces from the Prado Museum (Madrid) and the Hermitage (St. Petersburg), and the establishment of channels of communication in business to improve contacts between the various sectors and facilitate investment and trade.

New themes for US 2012 stamps….

sdx

US Postal Service will issue stamps on Dance, Literature and Nature in 2012.  Three new U.S. stamp subjects were unveiled by the U.S. Postal Service in early August. These are: Innovative Choreographers, O. Henry and Earthscapes.

In 2012, USPS will pay tribute to Isadora Duncan, Jose Limon, Katherine Dunham, and Bob Fosse. Designed to look like posters advertising a performance, the stamp art captures the luminosity and mystery of a live dance performance.

sdx

USPS will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of O. Henry with a stamp in its Literary Arts series. The short stories of O. Henry are beloved for their irony and skillful unfolding of plot; often, they end with a surprise twist. This prolific author wrote nearly 300 tales, most in the final eight years of his life. By the time of his death, he was the most widely read storyteller in America and was internationally admired.

sdx

Finally, the Earthscapes issuance offers stamp customers an opportunity to see the world in a new way. The stamp pane presents examples of three categories of earthscapes: natural, agricultural, and urban. The photographs were all created high above the planet's surface, either snapped by "eyes in the sky" - satellites orbiting the Earth - or carefully composed by photographers in aircraft.

New Stamps from India..

The President, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil releasing the Commemorative Postage Stamp on ‘Rashtrapati Bhavan’, in New Delhi on August 05, 2011. The Union Minister for Human Resource Development and Communications and Information Technology, Shri Kapil Sibal and Dr. Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat are also seen.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan or The Official Residence of the Head of the State is the official residence of the President of India, located at Raisina hill in New Delhi. Until 1950 it was known as "Viceroy's House" and served as the residence of the Viceroy and Governor-General of India.

The splendour of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is multi-dimensional. It is a vast mansion and its architecture is breathtaking.  Its architect was Edwin Landseer Lutyens.

The decision to build a residence in New Delhi for the British Viceroy was taken after it was decided in the Delhi Durbar of 1911 that the capital of India would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi in the same year. This vast mansion has got four floors and 340 rooms, with a floor area of 200, 000 square feet .The most prominent and distinguishing aspect of Rashtrapati Bhavan is its dome which is superimposed on its structure. It is visible from a distance and the most eye-catching round roof with a circular base in the heart of Delhi.

The striking  feature of the architecture of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is the use of Indian temple bells in its pillars. It is well known that the temple bells constitute part and parcel of our composite culture, particularly that of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions. Blending these bells with the Hellenic style architecture is a fine example of the fusion of Indian and European designs. Such bells are conspicuous in their absence in the North Block, South Block and in Parliament House. It is interesting to note that the ideas to adopt such bells in the pillars of Rashtrapati Bhavan came from a Jain temple at Moodabidri in Karnataka.

The main entrance to Rashtrapati Bhavan is known as Gate 35, and is located on Prakash Vir Shastri Avenue, renamed from North Avenue during November 2002, as a memorial to the politician of the namesake who served here during his tenure as a Member of Parliament for the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Mughal Gardens

The Mughal Gardens situated at the back of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, incorporates both Mughal and English landscaping styles. It displays numerous types of flowers and is open to public in February every year.
