Thai Traditional Festivals …

image

Date of Issue : 10 November 2011

Thai post will issue a set of four stamps on 10 November 2011 featuring traditional festivals of Thailand.

Reflection of Thai way of life

Design 1: Loy Krathong and Candle Festival (Sukhothai Province)

This festival has been held as far back as Sukhothai period. In the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng, it was known as "Jong Parien ceremony" or "Loi Phra Prateep". There was a mention in the Stone Inscription No.1 that this was largest festival in Sukhothai city, which led to a belief that this must be the same festival as Loi Krathong.

Design 2: The Festival of Illuminated Boat Procession (Nakhon Phanom Province)

The Festival of illuminated Boat Procession or locally known as Lai Rua Fai is an important festival held by the northeasterners to celebrate the end of Buddhist lent on the 15th vexing moon night or the 1st waning moon night of the 11th lunar month of each year. "Rua Fai" is a boat made from banana trunks or bamboos of 5-6 wah tied together. Sweets and any items people want to donate are placed in the boat. The boat exterior is decorated with the flowers, incense sticks, candles, lamps and torches to be lighted before the boat is released into a canal or river. This is the origin of the name "Lai Rua Fai".

Design 3: Yi-Peng Festival (Chiang Mai Province)

This stamp depicts the 12th Lunar Month Full Moon Festival of Lanna Thai (the northern region) which is known as Yi-Peng. On the day of Yi-Peng, people decorated Buddhist temples and their houses with banana trees, sugar cane, coconut fronds, Tung flowers, and Chor Prateep. Various style of paper lamps called Khom Yi-Peng are hoisted high as offerrings to the Lord Buddha. Small bowl lamps are lighted as offerings to the Three Gems of Buddhism while floating paper lamps are lighted and released into the sky as offerings to Phra Ketkaew Chulamanee in heaven.

Design 4: Loi Krathong Sai (Tak Province)

Tak Province organizes Loi Krathong Sai festival on the full moon of the 12th lunar month of each year. Latex of Yang trees is mixed with wood chips, formed into small balls and placed at the bottom of halved coconut shells. On the nights of the festival the latex balls are lighted and floated in the Ping River at regular interval, forming long rows of flickering lights above the water. These coconut shells (krathong) will eventually flow out of the audiences' sight. It is believed that participants and spectators of this festival will be blessed with what they wished for during the festival.

Indian Cuisine - Goan food on Portuguese stamps

Portugal Post issued a set of six stamps featuring Bebinca - Sabores da Lusophony (Flavours of Portuguese) on 5 June 2009. On one stamp Bebinca, also known as bibik or bebinka, is a type of pudding and a traditional Goan dessert is depicted.

Food 1

Date of Issue : 5 June 2009

Bebinca, also known as bibik or bebinka, is a type of pudding and a traditional Goan dessert. The ingredients include plain flour, sugar, ghee (clarified butter) and coconut milk.

Food 2

The dessert has to be baked in layers and traditionally has 16 layers. The dessert is very common in Goan cuisine. In Portugal, it is also a common dessert in Goan restaurants.

In Goa, Portuguese is spoken by an increasingly small minority, it is seen as the 'language of grandparents' because it is no longer taught in schools, nor is it an official language.

Food 4

Goa's national language Konkani, however, has picked up some Portuguese vocabulary, especially Konkani spoken by Catholics.

In addition, Indian Catholics,  often bear Portuguese surnames, despite having no Portuguese background themselves; a relic of the influence that Portugal had in India.

Food 3

Over the centuries, traditions linked to taste have also contributed to this cultural matrix.  Portugal brought new flavours to Europe, viz. spices, but also exported ancestral flavours to Brazil, Africa and Orient, such as deep-fried flavours, stews and desserts. These stamps bring forth interesting examples of the mutual influence of the Portuguese gastronomy on the gastronomy of people from other continents of Asia & Africa

It is common place today to state that gastronomy is an expression of the culture and heritage of the people. This  set of stamps dedicated to the gastronomy of various Portuguese speaking countries, a forgotten but relevant feature of the deep relations that have marked the meeting between Portugal and the peoples from other latitudes.

Joint stamp issue between South Africa and Indonesia

South Africa and Indonesia have jointly released a stamp issue marking 300 years of the link between the two countries. The stamps were officially launched on 15 October in Cape Town .

South Africa and Indonesia have only enjoyed formal diplomatic ties since August 1994, but the link between the two countries stretches back close to three hundred years. The colonisation of Africa and Asia by European powers from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries led to the enslavement of millions of Afro-Asian peoples, and an international slave trade. This slave trade led to the migration of large numbers of Asian and African people to different parts of the world. It was one such stream of people, most of whom were political exiles or prisoners who had opposed the colonisation of their countries that came to the Cape of Good Hope.

LESS KNOWN FACT FOR JAINISM COLLECTORS…

BOMBAY UNIVERSITY STAMP

                                                       - Sudhir Jain

Most of the Jainism theme collectors may not know that stamp issued on 31st Dec.1957 on the occasion of centenary of Bombay University is related to JAINISM theme. Historical and architectural Rajabai Tower is depicted on this stamp.

1 Bombay University Stamp

Rajabai Clock Tower is among one of the most cherished and outstanding landmarks of Mumbai. It is situated near Church gate Railway Station in the campus of Bombay University. It houses the library of the University and has some of the brilliant stained glass windows in
Asia. It was named after Rajabai who was a religious Jain lady. She was blind. Her son Premchand Roychand Jain was a cotton broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. Her mother being blind and staunch follower of Jainism, had to eat her dinner before sunset. The bells of Rajabai tower helped her know the time.

2 Rajabai Clock Tower

                                                Rajabai Clock Tower

Premchand Roychand started construction of this tower in the year 1869.It was designed by an English architect Sir Gilbert Scott on the lines of famous Big Ben clock tower of London.  Presenting a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles of architecture, Rajabai Tower is constructed out of Kurla stone. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs which was a princely sum in those days. It was completed in the year 1878. This 280 feet high tower was at that time the tallest building in Bombay.

Rajabai Clock Tower (under construction)

Through the sound of bell of this tower, Rajabai  didn't require anyone's help to know the time and she could herself take her dinner before sunset. . In the earlier times, it played the tunes of 'Rule Britannia', 'God Save the King' and 'A Handel Symphony', amongst the
sixteen tunes that changed four times a day. However, currently plays only 'Big Ben’ after every fifteen minutes.
